Since 1974 Schloss Rastatt hosts the "Site of remembrance for German liberation movements" of the German federal archive. In November 2008 the conception of the extension to the permanent exhibition adding the chapter "Liberation movements of the GDR" and the peaceful revolution of 1989 was tendered.

In the tender Claudio Hils was tasked with the visual planning and execution of the exhibition. It opened on 4th November 2009.
