In the river
Recovery, Conservation and Presentation of Historical Weser Ships
The River Weser kept two carrier-ships and their sandstone-freight for over three hundred years hidden.
In the past centuries much was transported by water. In particular heavy goods could be transported much easier, cheaper and faster by ships. That is how items were transported by sailing boats on the River Weser in the 16th, 17th and also 18th century.
Only a few sunken inland boats haven been discovered so far, most of them date back to the Roman time. That is why the recovery of these two well-preserved ships is considered to be an important event for the research of the history of navy and economy.
In this publication, Claudio Hils documents the phases of recovery, conservation and presentation of the historic Weser ships.
